Let’s talk about art
Drawing manga the hard way
Watch me struggle to make manga the traditional way. Watch me writhe in anxiety as I use these manga dip pen nibs and screen tone paper sheets for the first time. Watch me spill my coffee all over the counter.

Draw with me: Athena real time sketching (no music)
I've wondered about how these screentones actually work so this is so interesting!
If you want an affordable ultra flex pen that doesn't smell, try Fountain Pen Revolution's ultra flex nibs. They also sell nib units with ebonite feeds that fit into any Jowo nib unit. They're amazing.
looking for inspiration, I searched "how to draw again". And this is inspiring. I wanna do the same too
I appreciate that you tried it over a period of time and with different inks! This is such an investment, it's so helpful that you were thorough. It'd be cool to see you do an update video, and how it compares to the rest of your dip pen nibs!❤
Do you have Artstation? I would like to follow you there!!!
The hard way is the best way
I don't know what they used to do for manga, but from what I remember, in the 40's or whenever pre-digital era in the US they would photocopy all their sketches in blue (apparently, the specific shade was easily removable in a further photocopy) and ink and do all the rest of the stuff over those. I have no idea how much this would affect the quality of your page, but I imagine it'd be immensely less nerve wracking to photocopy your inked page and apply your screen tones to that.
I'm not a skilled drawer, but I actually thoroughly enjoy brush pens because it kinda goes against all the rules. It's chaotic and helps me go into a mindset where I'm not trying to be a perfectionist. I just let whatever I'm observing and drawing form itself as it does. Thanks for sharing tips! Hopefully I can improve but I'm having funny anyways.
Some film cams have better quality than digital
I've been in a similar position; feeling cynical about not only my own art but life in general. That in turn affected drawing as a hobby. Been in a bad place for a long time. Still am, but learning to cope with it.
Hi, maybe for your tools issue you can look for a book band pen case. It can double as the closing elastic too. Midori has just come out with a mesh book band pen case. TN just seem to become cultish to me. I appreciate that more people are using and sharing how they using it online. Things just change once there become 2 ‘separate’ entites (Midori and Traveler’s company).
That is awesome, you gave stayed drawing for 14 years now!
yeah you are an espresso type of individual
This guy is an inspiration to me
I love the ending. I was like "I couldn't leave the pages empty but I know it would be really hard for me to come back to it" And then you solved it so easily, I love it
The Gods looked upon this man and saw that he was good.
Tks!
with what pen are you drawing bro?
YEAHHHHHH!!!! Really really really love your wording of "loving the process". I hadn't put it that way myself, but it's always what I've felt. Being able to recognise that and put words to it is a real true skill, and shows that you really care about being an artist. I hope to be as insightful in my own works.
I bought a few of these because I wanted a shorter pen, and it's by far the best gel pen I've ever used.
I have to go back to this every now and then, im going through a personal Renaissance of sorts to make the most of this period I'm collecting a playlist for my personal coriculums. My guy is fundemntal and crucial for everything technical videos dont cover
Amongus tile
Very nice artwork as usual! Youre a huge inspiration for me! May I ask what paper you use? I bought the same sketchbook like the one you had as the blue ink sketchbook but the ink I use (black india ink with a maru pen) shines through... edit: I commented midway through the video, now that I finished I need to add: WOW!
This is supposed to be quicker than hatching??? Hell naw
I feel the grain and definition of a scaled celluloid image is better than a scaled digital image.
Step 1: have good confidence at posting your drawing
I would have guessed this was some rub-on application.
I want to feel like Bilbo Baggins too! Lol. Great video.
This was absolutely delightful. As someone who appreciates the slowness and texture of traditional art, this made my day
I had no idea that's how it was done. Cool!
This philosophy is pretty much what I apply to my woodworking. Is doing everything with handtools better than with power tools? Probably the opposite, but I simply wouldn't enjoy the hobby as much. The hand tools let me feel and connect with the material in a way I wouldn't get with power tools.
Love from India 🙂☺
Your age now ????
What a HORRIBLE waste of money. Scan the art into photoshop and put the appropriate dot gradient. I would neeeevvvver do this
Digital < Traditional Always…
Drawing manga the cool way 😎
Your art is truly wonderful and you have inspired me like crazy
Great art man, i appreciate your hard work 🙏🔥🔥 youre a huge motivation
Thank you so much 😀
Beside the art being absolute FIRE can i point how well this video put together? i felt excitement and nervousness through screen and was worried and sweating along :D Thank you so much for sharing your experience, i felt inspired
Glad you enjoyed it!
thanks for this video, cause lately I've been feeling less creative and will often times don't do anything at all so I really appreciate this
Well done 👏
Can you please tell me the font name?
do you sell any physical books?
we get it you drink coffee
I always wondered how they got the highlights on screentones. When you mentioned scratching it off with the back of the knife my brain had an "a-ha!" moment. The end result looks really good
GMK dots in a video about dots. Nice.
Sorry i was watching evangelion on the TV behind him the whole time
And this is why manga artists have assistants, who show up in their end-of-volume extra strips and are probably closer to them than their blood family lolol
should invest in some la sportiva katanas, saved up for ages but definitely worth it.
I love the reframing of the "trust the process" to "love the process"; I think, as artists, a lot of the time we are too focused on the end result rather than what bring us joy. That's why I value sketchbooks so much, it allows me to be a child again and try any and everything without fear.
